IV
Four of Cups
Symbols in the artwork
A figure sitting under a tree, arms crossed, looking down. Three cups are placed in front, and a hand emerging from the clouds on the right offers a fourth cup. The tree's shade and the seated posture suggest time for solitary reflection, and the cup that is not in sight recalls unexamined offers. This does not mean this person is necessarily missing an opportunity. This card asks you to reflect on whether you are content, if you are weary, or if you have the capacity to accept something new.
Sources and interpretation
I have referenced the original sense of ennui/discontent and the modern sense of indifference. The original reversed meaning of new relationships/teachings connects with the modern recovery of interest.
Written with reference to Rider–Waite–Smith symbolism and modern interpretations.

Upright
Boredom and indifference · Dissatisfied feelings · Time for introspection
If it doesn't feel right, first examine your current state.
Core meaning
The Four of Cups symbolizes boredom, indifference, and a feeling of dissatisfaction with the current situation or given offers. Reflection may be necessary, but it also centers on the inability to see new opportunities.
The image shows both a cup already placed and a newly offered cup. You don't need to rush yourself to be grateful for what you have, nor is it necessary to accept every new offer. It's okay to take a break and look at the actual content again. If you are postponing an answer, it is good to set a time for when you will reconsider. Take time to think, but try not to let the waiting drag on endlessly.
What to keep in mind
Do not assume that because you are indifferent now, everything will be like this in the future. There is no need to rush them by saying that if you refuse, you will lose an opportunity. Examine your own energy and the content of the proposal separately.
One small step today
Choose one proposal whose answer you have postponed, and write down what you know and what you want to ask further. After taking a short break, decide when you will decide again.
A question to consider
Are the offers not aligning with me? Am I currently lacking the capacity to accept them?
A thought for today
If I take a little distance, I might be able to see what I truly want more clearly.
Reversed
A newly recognized opportunity · Recovery of interest · Lingering apathy
If interest has rekindled, start with something that feels low-pressure.
Core meaning
The Four of Cups reversed can be read as noticing what was missed and regaining interest. Conversely, there is an interpretation where apathy and negative feelings persist, so it does not necessarily mean starting something entirely new.
You might be spending a lot of time in solitary thought, leading to delays in necessary communication and decisions. This card does not mean you must accept every invitation. Try to separate what draws you back in and what still doesn't fit. It's okay to decide how much to participate and what to decline. Even sending a brief reply can help you organize postponed thoughts and create space to look ahead.
What to keep in mind
Do not promise renewed interest all at once. You do not need to accept unsuitable offers just because you have waited a long time. Choose what fits your current time and heart.
One small step today
Choose one thing you want to try again and decide how much you can participate. If there is someone waiting for an answer, communicate what is possible, and write down what you will reflect on after trying it.
A question to consider
What is it that you want to try again right now? And what is it that you still want to keep?
A thought for today
You can start your next choice with something small or by giving a short answer.
Tarot offers a way to reflect on yourself through its symbols. Read it as a point of reference, not a certain prediction of the future or another person's feelings.
